Updated October 2026: Pianoforall is now offered through the Pianoforall Academy (online video lessons and interactive ebooks, with downloadable ebooks).
Pianoforall has traditionally been organized into 10 main books (the earlier ebook edition came as downloadable EPUB files with embedded HD video and audio), designed as a progression rather than ten unrelated mini-courses. The course is now taken through the Pianoforall Academy, so check the Academy’s course page for the current lesson layout. The early books establish rhythm, blues, chord fluency and smoother movement around the keyboard; later books reuse those skills for ballads, jazz, advanced blues, classical playing and more systematic technique. Here’s what all 10 cover and why the order matters.
The 10 books in order
- Book 1 — Rhythm Style: chords and reusable rhythm patterns that get you making music early.
- Book 2 — Basic Blues: foundational blues and boogie patterns that will be reused later.
- Book 3 — Incredible Inversions: smoother chord changes by keeping notes closer together.
- Book 4 — Chord Magic: patterns and memory shortcuts for building practical chord fluency.
- Book 5 — Advanced Chords: richer chord types and harmonic tools that prepare you for later styles.
- Book 6 — Ballad Style: accompaniment, melody and improvisational ideas in a slower, expressive style.
- Book 7 — Jazz Style: jazz harmony, voicings, blues-scale ideas and practical improvisation.
- Book 8 — Advanced Blues: returns to the early blues foundation and develops it with more advanced riffs and techniques.
- Book 9 — Classical Piano: makes reading and classical repertoire a major focus while using the chord and pattern knowledge built earlier.
- Book 10 — Speed Learning: scales, arpeggios, patterns, different keys and systematic technique practice.
The useful thing about the sequence is that notation is not treated as the price of admission. Basic notation appears along the way, but Book 9 is where reading and classical repertoire become a major focus. By then you already have chord, rhythm and pattern knowledge to help make sense of what you see on the page. Our Book 1 review digs into the opening Rhythm Style stage in detail.
Should you ever skip ahead?
Mostly no. The temptation may be to jump straight to Book 7 for jazz or Book 9 for classical, but those books are easier to understand after the chord, inversion and pattern work that comes before them. Book 8 is an especially clear example of the progression because Advanced Blues deliberately returns to foundations introduced in Book 2 and develops them further.
You can of course explore a later topic if it is what motivates you, but the main learning track makes more sense in order. Following the sequence lets later styles reuse skills that have already had time to become familiar.
How long the whole thing takes
There is no single official completion time for the 10 books. Pianoforall is self-paced, and moving on only because you have reached the end of an ebook misses the point: later books reuse skills from earlier ones, so fluency matters more than page count. Our guide to how long Pianoforall takes explains the factors that make one learner’s timeline different from another’s.
Which books matter most for your goal
If your dream is jazz, Book 7 is the dedicated Jazz Style book, supported by the chord and blues work before it, and learning jazz piano with Pianoforall covers how far it takes you. If it’s classical, Book 9 is the dedicated classical stage, and whether Pianoforall teaches classical sets expectations honestly. For the overall verdict on the whole set, the full Pianoforall review ties it together.
If you’re the type who likes to see the destination before starting the journey, skim the later books’ topics but resist actually jumping there. Knowing that ballads, jazz, advanced blues and classical playing are waiting later in the course is motivating; the important point is that those later books are designed to build on the rhythm, blues, inversions and chord work that comes first. The course is a staircase, and every step is cut to land you exactly where the next one begins. Trust the order and it does the heavy lifting for you.
Frequently asked questions
How many books are in Pianoforall?
Ten, in the earlier ebook edition (downloadable EPUB files with embedded HD video and audio). The course is now taken through the Pianoforall Academy; check the Academy’s course page for the current lesson layout. Either way, the books are designed as a connected progression.
Can I start with a later Pianoforall book?
You can, but it’s not recommended. Later books assume the chord and rhythm skills from the earlier ones, so jumping ahead usually leads to frustration.
Which Pianoforall book teaches reading music?
Basic notation appears along the way, but Book 9 — Classical Piano — is where reading and classical repertoire become a major focus. Book 10 is Speed Learning, which consolidates technique through scales, arpeggios, patterns and work across different keys.
