How to Learn Piano: The Honest Beginner’s Roadmap

🎯 Step 1 — Understand the Keyboard

The piano has 88 keys but you only need to know a handful to get started. Learn where middle C is, understand the pattern of white and black keys, and you’ll feel immediately less lost.

⏱️ Step 4 — Build a Practice Routine

15 to 20 minutes daily beats 2 hours once a week. Your brain consolidates motor skills during sleep — so short, frequent sessions accelerate progress dramatically. A simple daily routine:

    Slowly play through your current chord progression or a simple scale to get your fingers moving.

    Work on Something Hard (7 min)

    Focus on the hardest part of the song you’re learning. Slow it down. Repeat just that section.

🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid

Practising too fast. Speed is a result, not a method. Learn everything at half the tempo you think you need, then speed up gradually. Slow practice builds the muscle memory that fast playing requires.
