One of the most practical questions for new Pianoforall students: what keyboard do you actually need? The good news is that Pianoforall is not demanding in terms of hardware, especially for the first several books.
The Minimum Requirements
For Books 1 through 5, you need: at least 61 keys (5 octaves), the ability to connect headphones, and touch sensitivity (velocity-sensitive keys). That’s it. You don’t need weighted keys, 88 keys, MIDI, or Bluetooth. A basic digital keyboard in the $100–150 range handles the first 5 books perfectly well.
When Weighted Keys Become Important
Book 6 introduces classical technique. Classical piano technique is specifically built around the feel of weighted, hammer-action keys — the resistance that real piano keys have. Playing classical technique on unweighted keys builds habits that don’t transfer cleanly to acoustic piano. If classical is in your plans, upgrading to a keyboard with weighted keys before Book 6 is a worthwhile investment.
Recommended Keyboards by Budget
| Budget | Keyboard | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under $150 | Casio CT-S300 or Yamaha PSR-E373 | Fine for Books 1–5. No weighted keys. |
| $200–350 | Yamaha P-45 or Roland FP-30X | Weighted keys. Works for full curriculum. |
| $400–600 | Casio PX-S3100 or Yamaha P-125 | Better action, better sound. Excellent long-term choice. |
Do You Need 88 Keys?
Not for most of Pianoforall. The course primarily uses the middle register. Books 7–10 include classical pieces that occasionally reach into extended ranges, but 73 keys handles 95% of the content. 88 keys is nice but not necessary.
The Practical Recommendation
If you’re starting fresh and budget is a consideration, a Casio CT-S300 (~$80) or a used Yamaha PSR-series keyboard gets you through Books 1–5. If you have $250–350 to spend and want a keyboard that works for the full curriculum without upgrading, a Yamaha P-45 with its graded hammer action is the classic recommendation for Pianoforall students.
